David directing Raquel in "Age of Aquarius"

It is called “Raquel”, but it would not have been amiss to call it “Raquel and David”, because of the staging and direction of David Winters. He has pulled off a visually gorgeous hour and Miss Welch profits mightily by it. In the end, in fact, what is fascinatingly triumphant—more than any of the stars in the show—is Winters singularly uplifting sense of beauty, exuberance and repose. His past shows have also exhibited this distinctively-styled view, but never with such exhilaration. Before the show is on very long, one realizes that the director has given it a motion picture, rather than the television look.

David with longtime, award-winning cameraman, Stephen Burum

A jewel is a stone until it’s cut by an artist who places it in a setting that points up its beauties. That role was played by David Winters who creatively integrated the project that was built. He wasn’t on the screen but his dynamic arrangements of colors and costumes, lines and forces were. So was his choice of striking photos angles achieved in concert with cinematographer Stephen Burum. They raided the camera possibilities. Fast and slow motion, double exposure, dissolves—the whole gamut was used with exhilarating effect. What they produced was plainly a television phenomenon.

David directing a tomboyish Raquel in Mexico City

Breathtaking shots......What is best and most impressive is what Winters accomplishes when he has Miss Welch away from the guest stars- when he can develop his visual loveliness and fun.
